Tesla has just taken the wraps off it’s latest version of the successful Model S electric car.
Now sporting an extra electric motor which drives the front wheels, the all-wheel drive version of the saloon has increased performance, but with little detriment to the range (in fact, on the non-“P” versions, the range is actually increased by 10 miles – to 285 miles on a single charge!).
The top-of-the-range Model S P85D now boasts a 0-60mph time of just 3.2 seconds. To put that into context, it makes it the fastest accelerating 4-door production car ever made. It’s faster than a Ferrari 599 GTO, faster than a Porsche 911 GT3. It’s as fast to 60mph as the McLaren F1 supercar.
Of course, speed is nothing without control. To that end, Tesla have kitted out all Model S versions with “Autopilot”. This means every Model S rolling out of the factory will include a forward radar, 12 long range ultrasonic sensors that reach 16 feet radially around the car, a forward looking camera and a high precision electric assist braking system.
The autopilot technology is able to steer to stay with a lane, change roadways with a tap of a turn signal and manage speed by reading road signs. This aims to improve the driving experience by minimizing the tedious journeys and making it safer.
