MOT Tester training

At ICT Workshop Solutions Ltd, our Skipton tutors offer two training courses for MOT Testers: the SEG Level 2 Award in MOT Testing (Classes 4&7) and the SEG Level 2 Award in MOT Testing (Classes 1&2) for motorcycles. MOT Management

Course aims

The aim of the SEG Level 3 Award in MOT Test Centre Management is to provide understanding of the modern MOT test station, including effective management methods that meet the DVSA and legal standards as set out by the Department of Transport.

Course duration

The SEG Level 3 Award in MOT Test Centre Management course spans two days on a 16-hour contract, with a maximum of four candidates during any given course.

Course completion

You will have successfully completed the SEG Level 3 Award in MOT Test Centre Management course upon passing our online examination, which is open book and comprises multiple-choice questions. You must achieve 80% or higher to pass.

Course costs £675 including registration

You will receive certification following completion, as well as feedback from our tutors.

What will you learn?

The following is a summary of what you will learn over the duration of the SEG Level 3 Award in MOT Test Centre Management course:

The history of the MOT.

Test classes, including relevance to seating capacity, vehicle type, weight, and individual issues concerning Piaggio three-wheeled machines relevant to class 1&2 VTS, as well as the structure of the two-part VT9a classes poster.

How and where to access reference material for future use, such as legislation, testing information, and more.

The equipment authorised for use during an MOT, and optional equipment for LV testing.

Equipment that requires calibration, how this is the responsibility of the AE.

The difference between ATL and OPTL.

The meaning of the AE and how this differs when applied to the MOT Manager.

The role and responsibilities of the VTS, as well as discipline procedures applicable to the VTS and AE. This includes sanction levels, appeal procedures, and the allocation of credit points.

Potential security problems surrounding passwords, contingency certificates, and 2FA cards.

Site assessment, including rationale, processes, and self-assessment tools available for access.

The Retest Process as specified on the VT9a class’s sheet and the MOT Testing Guide, including the correct procedure for the PRS function.

The appeal procedure for inverted and statutory appeals.

MOT documentation and the importance of each document, including how to keep them safe and in order.

Equipment management, including calibration, authorisation, and the necessary retention requirements.

MOT Tester training

SEG Level 2 Award in MOT Testing (Classes 4 & 7)

Before you can qualify as an MOT tester for cars and light commercial vehicles, you must complete a course such as the SEG Level 2 Award in MOT Testing (Classes 4&7). This will allow you to apply for the DVSA's Certificate of Competence (CoC) which enables you to go on to become an MOT Tester.

This course is made up to 29 GLH (Guided Learning Hours).

For the first two days, this course is classroom-based. We will be using a range of all MOT documentation available, including the MOT Guide, MOT Testing Manuals, and Site Risk Assessment Guides.

Day three will be practical workshop based, working closely with the following guidelines:

  • Working safely within a vehicle test centre.

  • Communicating with colleagues and customers.

  • How to manage and maintain your CPD.

  • Carrying out pre-checks.

  • Carry out an MOT test.

A brief description of what you will learn on this course is as follows:

  • Test classes

  • Equipment suitable for authorisation

  • Where and how to use reference material for future MOT concern

  • Methods of repair

  • Fail criteria for all vehicle parts, including lighting and electrical systems, wheels and tyres, seat belts, suspension, steering systems, body, braking systems, and fuel, exhaust, and emission systems

  • Retest procedures.

  • Issues and rationale to consider regarding the driver's view of the road, including MOI and RFR corrections for mirrors, wipers, and washers.

  • Contingency procedures.

To complete your training, you must complete a Practical Demonstration Test, which includes carrying out a full MOT test (including RBT and head lamp aim). Upon successfully passing this test, you will be awarded an awarded a SEG/IMI certificate of completion.
