Diagnostic Equipment

Diagnostics is an area often promising much, but in the end leaving customers disappointed. In many ways it is the fault of the industry. As far as diagnosing problems on cars is concerned there are many pieces of equipment that are required.

Mention diagnostics and most people’s first thought now is a Scan type tool. Cutting through the sales jargon is usually the first thing you need to do. Remember the Scan Tool connects into the vehicles network of ECU’s, this then usually gives you a number of options:

  • Read Trouble Codes
  • Live Data
  • Turn on Actuators
  • Configurations
  • EOBD

Whichever the company’s product you buy, you will only ever be looking at what the computers on the car are thinking. The important thing to remember is that the computers control everything the cars do now, so if they are confused or receiving information that is incorrect then of course they will make incorrect decisions.

With the advent of Block Exemption (again), there is also the ability to program or re-program ECU’s. Understanding this process is essential for garages to keep pace with the ever increasing dependence on computer systems. This type of testing and programming is separate and on top of what we normally consider diagnostics. This is known as Pass-Thru programming and uses technical internet sites set up by the vehicle manufacturers.

ICT Workshop Solutions works closely with many Diagnostic companies such as Snap-on, Sun Diagnostics, Omitec and Crypton. As a Distributor we sell and support Omitec and Crypton products.

One piece of equipment just as important as the trusty Scan Tool is the Oscilloscope, the mere mention of the name Oscilloscope often sends a tingle of fear down the spines of many motor mechanics. Don’t worry, with just a little training you will suddenly gain the reassuring glow of confidence knowing you are so much more likely to diagnose right first time.

Just a quick look through our pages should show just how in-depth with diagnostics you can go without necessarily breaking the bank.
